Teacher Richard McLaren confirmed the honesty of the vote at the Extraordinary Congress of the International Boxing Association (IBA) on the abolition of the re-election of the head of the organization.
Russian Umar Kremlev led the IBA in December 2020. In May, the official is re-elected. Kremlev remained the sole candidate for the post after his rival, Dutchman Boris van der Furst, was eliminated from the election. Following this, van der First appealed the suspension to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and won the case. Kremlev proposed in June that a re-election of the IBA president should take place.
During the Congress vote in Yerevan, where McLaren was an observer, the question was asked: “Should we organize re-elections? 106 members of the organization responded negatively, 36 positively and 4 abstained.
– As an observer at the congress, I can assure you that everything is in order. As an observer, I followed the electronic process at the Congress tables. I can confirm that there were no issues or manipulations with the voting results,” McLaren said in a letter, the text of which is posted on the IBA’s website.
In 2016, McLaren wrote a report in which he stated that in Russia there was a state system that manipulated doping samples and covered up athletes. In 2017, Vitaly Smirnov, head of the Independent Public Anti-Doping Commission, said McLaren had dropped allegations of state support for Russian doping.
