2020 Olympics bronze medalist and now three-time Russian boxing champion Imam Khataev cannot yet say unequivocally whether he will go to the World Championships in Tashkent.
On Saturday in Chita, Khataev defeated Saveliy Sadoma by unanimous decision in the final in the weight category up to 80 kg and won the national championship for the third time. The world championship is scheduled for May 2023 in Tashkent.
– I managed to do somewhere more than half of what I thought. The adversary is not the easiest. He is a young boxer, I wish him good luck for the future. If I had a match in the semi-finals, it would be easier for me in the final. I would like to warmly thank the leaders and coaches for organizing such competitions. I want to thank the management of the Akhmat club and the head of the Chechen Republic Ramzan Akhmatovich Kadyrov.
– Do you have an idea of your future career? Will you continue to compete at the amateur level or will you focus solely on the pros?
– I cannot yet say how my future career will evolve, if I will stop only at amateur boxing. If there are valid options from promotion companies, we will see. Will need to be discussed.
– Soon the World Cup in Tashkent.
– After the Olympics, I wanted to go to the World Championships, I prepared for two months and I was at the top of my game. But they took (the champion of Russia-2021) Sadoma, saying that they had to give way to young people (in Belgrade, Sadoma won bronze – “”). And I gave in, although I was very determined to go into the world. I did not have this opportunity. Now I don’t know if I’m going to box at the World Championships or not.
