Lomachenko: I was more interested in sparring with Shakur

Ukrainian boxer compared two star Americans

Former world champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenko compared his sparring with Shakur Stevenson and Ryan Garcia.

“It was more interesting for me to spar with Shakur, because we trained with him, probably five or six times. I only sparred with Ryan Garcia for three rounds.”

“When I sparred with Ryan Garcia, I didn’t know anything about him. I was just getting ready for my next fight. He came to my gym and we had a few rounds. When I sparred with Stevenson, I knew him. I knew that he was an Olympic silver medalist. I know Shakur knows boxing.”

“Now everything is different. Now Garcia is a professional boxer. When I sparred with him, he was still a kid. But now he has power, professional experience, speed, IQ. The same can be said about Gervonta Davis.”

Recall that the Ukrainian boxer will return to the ring on October 29. Lomachenko’s fight with Jemaine Ortiz will take place at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York.

Lomachenko had his last fight in December last year, defeating Richard Commey by unanimous decision. Subsequently, Vasily could fight with George Kambosos, but refused it against the backdrop of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Earlier, promoter Bob Arum said he was ready to organize a fight for the title of undisputed lightweight champion between Lomachenko and the winner of the Devin Haney-George Kambosos rematch in early 2023.
