“It is important for every athlete to represent his country, getting a medal is secondary” – IBA director Kremlev

President of the International Boxing Association (IBA) Umar Kremlev commented on the decision to allow Russians and Belarusians to participate in international competitions, noting that it is important that every athlete competes under the national flag.

On October 5, the IBA Board of Directors voted to admit boxers from Russia and Belarus to competitions under the auspices of the organization with the decision taking immediate effect. Russian and Belarusian boxers will return to competition under their national flags and anthems.

– This is good news not only for Russia and Belarus, but also for the boxing world. This proves that any international association is independent and should not get involved in politics. We must demonstrate and encourage all international associations to follow us, because we must create conditions, not punish athletes.

It is important that every athlete represents their country, receiving a medal is secondary,” Kremlev told ‘s Loud.

At the end of February, the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called on international federations to withdraw Russian and Belarusian athletes from participating in competitions due to the conflict in Ukraine.
