Mayra Aguiar shines and wins the third judo world championship

After a good campaign in the edition, Brazilian Mayra Aguiar overcame her Chinese opponent in the final and won her third world judo title in her career.

The Brazilian Mayra Aguiar won the third Judo world championship this Tuesday, 11, and at the same time reached an unprecedented mark among men and women of the category in the country. In Taskhent, Uzbekistan, the Olympic medalist surpassed the Chinese Zhenzao Ma in the decision by wazari, in the 78 kg category.

Champion also in 2014 and 2017, in addition to being runner-up in 2010, Mayra Aguiar earned her seventh podium in World Championships. The Brazilian still adds bronze medals in the 2011, 2013 and 2019 editions, being runner-up for teams in 2013.

In this year’s edition, she joined Rafaela Silvatwice champion in the 57 kg, and Daniel Cargnin, bronze in the up to 73 kg category, as world medalists. Brazil will still have representatives in individual and team disputes.

To reach the decision this year, Mayra left behind the Croatian Petrunjela Pavic (victory in both punishments), Kazakh Arena Jangeldina (by ippon), the Japanese – and current Olympic champion – Hamada Shori and, in the semifinal, the current European champion, the German Alina Boehm.

Now three-time world champion, Mayra Aguiar also accumulates historic marks in Brazilian sport. The 31-year-old judoka also won three consecutive bronze medals at the Olympic Games: London 2012, Rio de Janeiro 2016 and Tokyo 2020.

It is worth remembering that this was the first World Cup with points for the Olympic ranking, qualifying for the Paris Games, in 2024. The champion leaves Uzbekistan with the title and two thousand points in the “race” for a place in the event in France.

The last edition of the competition was held in June last year in Budapest. The Brazilian judokas won a total of three bronze medals, one of them in the mixed team competition and the other two in the category over 78 kg, with Beatriz Souza and Maria Suellen Altheman.
