The former world champion in three weight categories explained why he didn’t turn pro in 2008.
Vasily Lomachenko tells why he didn’t turn pro in 2008, right after the Beijing Olympics.
According to the former world champion, in three weight categories, his father insisted that Vasily become a two-time winner of the Games.
“All novice boxers who want to be Olympic champions turn pro after winning a gold medal. I think all good amateur boxers want to try to become champions as professionals. It happened to me too.
When I won my first Olympic gold medal, I decided to turn pro. But I stayed because that was my father’s decision. He explained that I have to go to another Olympics, because there are no two-time Olympic champions in Ukraine. This is a historic moment.
But I didn’t think about it. I did not understand. A medal is enough for me, because this was my dream when I was a child. I fell asleep and woke up in this dream, lived in this dream. When I won the gold medal, I was ready for professional boxing. But my father explained to me that we have to do it again. I said: “Okay, no problem,” Lomachenko said in an interview on the ESNEWS YouTube channel.
Recall that Vasily Lomachenko won two Olympic gold medals: in 2008 in Beijing and in 2012 in London.
Earlier, Lomachenko spoke about his dream of a professional career.
