Athletistic/ MMA. Javier Mendez, the trainer of Russian MMA fighter Islam Makhachev (22-1-0), has said if his ward will face Brazilian Charles Oliveira (33-8-0(1)) if he misses the weigh-in.

“Islam will decide that, but I’m all for him to fight. If Charles loses weight, and Islam does, it’s still a title fight for Islam. This fight is not about not Charles, but the title. Islam has no dream to beat Charles “his dream is to become a lightweight champion. So it doesn’t matter if Charles makes weight. It doesn’t matter if Islam does it,” Mendes said.

Charles Oliveira has the unpleasant experience of a missed weigh-in on the eve of the title fight: on the eve of the fight with the American Justin Gaethje on May 7, 2022, Oliveira did not gain weight and lost the belt of UFC lightweight champion. Oliveira won that fight thanks to Gaethje’s submission after a rear naked choke in the first round, but the championship title went vacant.

The fight between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira will take place on October 22 at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.
