Ukrainian won Olympic gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012
Former world champion in three weight categories Vasily Lomachenko explained why did not turn pro even after winning Olympics in Beijing in 2008.
“When I won my first Olympic gold medal, I decided to turn pro. But I stayed because my father made such a decision. He explained that I had to go to another Olympics, since there was no two-time Olympic champion in Ukraine. This is a historic moment.”
“But I didn’t think about it. I didn’t understand it. One medal was enough for me, because it was my childhood dream. I fell asleep and woke up with this dream, lived with this dream. When I took the gold medal, I was ready for professional boxing. But my father explained to me that we need to do it again. I said, “OK, no problem.”
The Ukrainian won Olympic gold in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.
Recall that the Ukrainian boxer will return to the ring on October 29. Lomachenko’s fight with Jemaine Ortiz will take place at the Hulu Theater in Madison Square Garden in New York.
Lomachenko had his last fight in December last year, defeating Richard Commey by unanimous decision. Subsequently, Vasily could fight with George Kambosos, but refused it against the backdrop of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine.
