UFC 280: Makhachev teases Charles do Bronx days before fight

Russian fighter Islam Makhachev provoked Brazilian Charles do Bronx, his opponent at UFC 280, on the 22nd, saying he is 2-0 for his team

Islam Makhachev will face Charles do Bronx next Saturday, the 22nd, at UFC 280. The two will fight for the title, still vacant, for the lightweight (up to 70kg) category. This Tuesday, the 18th, the Russian fighter made a provocative post on his social networks, pointing out that his team is winning the confrontation against the Brazilian’s team by 2-0.

Makhachev cited his comrades’ victories over Charles’ allies. In 2015, Islam Mamedov beat Jorge Patino Macaco for the WSOF (World Series of Fighting). In 2021, Tagir Ulanbekov overcame Allan Puro Osso for the UFC. The two Brazilian athletes mentioned by the Russian are in Abu Dhabi, following the preparation of Do Bronx for the belt dispute.

With an incredible streak of 11 straight wins, ten of them by knockout or submission, Charles do Bronx is the last lightweight champion, but lost the belt after not making it to weight before his last fight, against Justin Gaethje. The balance controversy did not affect the Brazilian fighter, who verbally agreed to face Makhachev to regain the post, in July of this year.

Islam Makhachev is two years younger than the Brazilian and has an enviable record, with 22 wins and only one loss in his career. The fighter is a student and personal friend of Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is also Charles’ rival, and is going to his first title fight against the record holder for submissions in UFC history.

A month ago, Charles from the Bronx spoke about the string of provocations he had been receiving from Khabib Nurmagomedov and his opponent at UFC 280. “These guys [Islam e Khabib] want to get into my mind somehow. They said I gave up, I showed that I don’t give up. They said I can’t, I showed that I can. They tried to steal my belt and I said, ‘Hold on, let me show you how it works’”exclaimed the Brazilian in an interview with the podcast “MMA Hoje”
