At UFC 280, Charles do Bronx couldn’t hold back the momentum of the Russian fighter, who won the organization’s lightweight belt.

This Saturday afternoon, the 22nd, Charles do Bronx stepped into the octagon of UFC 280 and faced the Russian Islam Makhachev in the fight for the vacant lightweight belt. With great expectations from all Brazilians, the fight heated up the atmosphere in the arena in Abu Dhabius United Arab Emiratesand delivered what it promised: rhythm and quality!

However, Islam Makhachev came very prepared for the Octagon and managed to keep pace with Charles Oliveira. With a right cross and submission soon after, the Russian beat the Brazilian and became the lightweight champion. Now, ‘from the Bronx’ remains one of the main challengers for the future of the division in the UFC.

With the fight already in action, Charles tried two kicks in a row and ended up suffering Makhachev’s counterattack. In straight striking, the Russian got the better of him and fell over the Brazilian, who started working on jiu-jitsu and looking for the submission. After reacting and standing in the octagon, ‘do Bronx’ suffered another fall and took more blows.

However, Charles from the Bronx used all his experience in the ground fight and managed to hold back the Russian’s momentum. Always looking for the submission, the Brazilian connected strong kicks to Mackachev’s face and ended the first round in good condition. In the second round, fighting on the fence was the strategy used by Islam.

In the finalization attempt, Islam Makhachev fitted the ‘katagatame‘ and saw the Brazilian declare the end of the fight. With that, the Russian got the better of his rival and secured the lightweight title in the main event of UFC 280.

Look, you (Daniel Cormier) were once a fighter and you know how it is. There are days that are not our best day. I promise everyone that I will get him (belt) back (…). Dana, I’ve always accepted fights anywhere in the world. Please I have to be next, give me the chance and I’ll be ready“, said Charles while still inside the Octagon on the official UFC broadcast.

It is also worth mentioning the atmosphere between the fighters after the fight. After exchanging provocations and insults, Charles do Bronx and Islam Makhachev gave a class on professionalism, made a point of greeting each other and drove the audience crazy. However, the Brazilian has already asked for a rematch with the Russian and the UFC president.
