Charles Oliveirabetter known as ‘Charles do Bronx’, is one of the greatest legacies of world sport still in activity. Born in Vicente de Carvalhodistrict of guarujáin Sao Paulohe is the record holder for the most submissions in UFC history, with 16 in total, and the one who has won the most fights by fast lane (knockout or submission), with three knockouts.
Charles is also the current lightweight champion of the organization, and this Saturday, the 22nd, he will fight for the UFC belt for the third time, in Abu Dhabi. On the eve of the fight, the Brazilian talked to the press, projected the clash with Islam Makhachev and promised intense pace to keep the organization’s title.
The story of Charles of the Bronx is one of pure overcoming. Raised in the periphery, he faced several challenges to reach the top of the world in sports. Diagnosed with rheumatism in the bones and heart murmur, it was on the mat, more specifically in jiu-jitsu, that the athlete was able to overcome his physical limitations.
At just 12 years old, he was champion of São Paulo and over time he accumulated titles in the modality, being also Brazilian, Pan-American, and world champion and winning the black belt of the martial art in 2010. He faced the challenges of life on the mats and in the rings. that came from his remarkable nickname “from the bronx”.
“Periphery, where I come from. Whenever I went to compete in an amateur championship, I faced much bigger and stronger opponents and I was skinny. And, they always said, look at the guys from the favela over there, from the Bronx. As I needed a nickname to be able to fight, I put mine as from the Bronx”, said the fighter, who is now under new career management, for the “GoDoIt!“.
The beginning of his legacy in the UFC begins in 2010, against Darren Elkins, with a victory at 41 seconds of the first round via submission, something that would become his trademark. In 2021, after more than 10 years of career in the organization, he showed his resilience and strength to the world by winning the lightweight belt by beating the multi-champion Michael Chandler.
