In late December, traditionally, turned to leading boxers, trainers and officials with a request to name the top three for 2022 and rank them in descending order. 33 respondents participated in the survey. The rules are simple – if a boxer was placed on the front row, they received three points, two and one points were awarded for second and third place, respectively.
WBA (Super) light heavyweight champion Dmitry Bivol won the vote by a huge margin. 27 respondents put the Russian in first place, and only one interlocutor did not include Bivol in his top three. World Boxing Council (WBC) boss Mauricio Suleiman “stands out”. Although it was strange to see such public recognition of an athlete who became the best boxer of the year according to the main competitor, the WBA. Well, or the head of the WBC is very busy with the idea of competitions between transgender people. But now that’s not it.
Thus, Bivol scored 90 points out of a possible 99. The fate of second place was only decided by one point, and suddenly another Russian, Artur Beterbiev, took this prestigious line with 27 points. Briton Tyson Fury (26 points) completes the top three. On the fourth row was the Japanese Noaya Inoue (19), followed by Alexander Usik (15), and the last in the flower ceremony (making analogies with the biathlon) was the American Devin Haney (13). Americans Jermell Charlo (3) and Terence Crawford (2) also scored points. Russians Sergey Kovalev and Albert Batyrgaziev, Mexican Saul Alvarez, Kazakh Gennady Golovkin and Shavkat Rakhimov of Tajikistan each have one point.
Well, now let’s talk about the achievements of our winners in 2022.
Dmitry Bivol gained full world recognition thanks to the victory in Las Vegas in May over the best boxer of that time in any weight class (and at the same time the highest paid), the absolute world champion of the second Mexican middleweight Saul Alvarez. Only the Russian belt was on the line in the fight, but Bivol pulled off a very confident victory, inflicting star Canelo’s second loss of his career (in 2013, Floyd Mayweather Jr. achieved it). It’s funny that it was Saul Alvarez who won the poll in 2021, but that was due to the fact that in thirteen months he collected all the 76kg belts. Bivol was not mentioned once last year and Beterbiev scored seven points, ranking sixth.
In November, Bivol made his tenth (!) successful defense of the WBA belt in a fight with another Mexican boxer, Gilberto Ramirez, who at the time of the fight in Abu Dhabi was walking with a 44-0 record. Thus, Bivol downgraded (we can’t find other words) Ramirez, inflicting on him the first defeat of his career. After this fight, they joked: Bivol should be recognized as the teacher of the year in Mexico, because the Russian “brought two Mexican tops to boxing school at once”.
Artur Beterbiev had one fight in 2022. In June, the Russian defeated American Joe Smith by second-round technical knockout and added the WBO title to his WBC and IBF light heavyweight belts. Arthur’s stats continue to impress – first 18 wins in 18 fights in the professional ring. On January 28 in London, Beterbiev is scheduled to face WBO mandatory challenger, Briton Anthony Yarde.
Tyson Fury has never fought Oleksandr Usyk for the undisputed heavyweight title. The Briton was limited to confident early wins over compatriots Dillian Whyte and Derek Chisora. And Usyk entered the ring only once – in August, by split decision, he defeated Briton Anthony Joshua for the second time and defended the WBA, IBF, WBO belts for the first time.
Japan’s Noaya Inoue continued to collect belts this year and eventually became the undisputed champion of the bantamweight division. Inoue in June already in the second round beat another top boxer in this category, the Filipino Nonito Donaire (to the WBA belts, IBF added the WBC title), and in December in the 11th round he knocked out Briton Paul Butler (he also won the WBO belt).
American Devin Haney started the year with only the WBC lightweight belt. In June, a duel for the title of absolute champion took place with Australian George Kambosos – Haney won a landslide victory by unanimous decision. In October, a rematch is organized, and the score is even more devastating in favor of Haney. And most importantly, both battles took place in Australia.
American Jermell Charlo entered the ring only once in 2022, but immediately for the title of absolute champion in the light middleweight division. In May, Charlo in the tenth round knocked out Argentinian Brian Castaño, then holder of the WBO belt. Recall that these boxers met last year, their fight ended in a draw. Charlo’s first defense of the belts was scheduled for January 28 in a fight with Konstantin Tszyu’s son, Timofey Tszyu, but the American boxer injured his hand and the fight was postponed indefinitely.
