Unification fight could take place in spring 2023
Interim WBO World Champion Joe Joyce believes WBC champion Tyson Fury in a fight with the holder of the WBA / WBO / IBF / IBO titles Oleksandr Usyk may run into serious problems.
“I don’t think Usyk will immediately get to work, as he did with Joshua. It seems to me that they will try to understand each other, to feel the timing. As for me, against Fury, Usyk needs to stay at close range. But I don’t know, Tyson is good at throwing uppercuts, so it’s a risk. He piles on you and complicates the life of smaller fighters. By doing this, he can neutralize Usyk’s efforts.”
“Fury’s work at a distance can be countered by Usyk’s head movement and footwork. He is able to do this for 12 rounds, which he showed in the fight with Joshua. Fury throws a lot of punches and hits, so that’s going to give Usyk a problem.”
“I think it will be a very good fight. I’ll be interested to see how it ends, as you never know until you see it.”
A unification fight between Usyk and Fury could take place in February or March of this year. Promoter Alexander Krasyuk said that the most effective working date for the fight with Fury is March 4th.
Promoter Frank Warren said Usyk-Fury could have a rematch clause. The date of the fight may be affected by the Brit’s injury received in the duel with Derek Chisora.
