Boxer awaits WADA decision on possible doping
Promoter Eddie Hearn stated that the holder of the WBA Continental welterweight belt Conor Benn (21-0, 14 KOs) will return to the ring in the first half of 2023. The boxer is awaiting a decision from the World Anti-Doping Agency regarding possible doping and potential disqualification.
“Conor Benn will return either in early 2023 or mid-2023, that’s a fact,” the promoter said.
“Conor is very upset right now. But he presented all the evidence to clear his name and now we are waiting for the decision of WADA and WBC. We want this decision to be made as soon as possible. But the thing is, Benn can fight – not just anywhere, but most places in the world right now. He’s not banned. But we want a hearing to clear his name.”
“I love the fight between Gervonta Davis and Conor Benn. Why not? Gervonta fought at lightweight and I’m sure he wouldn’t mind fighting at 147 or close to it. I never even thought about this fight, and now I appreciate, these two together would be fireworks.
Recall that the British Boxing Control Board (BBVOC) determined that the duel between Benn and Chris Eubank Jr. is impossible due to a positive doping test from Conor.
Clomiphene was found in the boxer’s blood. Benn is expected to be banned from fighting for up to four years. However, the disqualification may be reduced due to the first such incident in the boxer’s career.
