The main obstacle in the way of fighting for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion has been removed.
The International Boxing Federation no longer insists on Alexander Usik’s mandatory title defense against Croatian challenger Filip Hrgovic.
This is what the president of the federation, Darryl Peoples, said. The functionary said that the IBF recognizes the fundamental right of protection for the WBA, and is not conflicted about it.
“On November 12, 2022, the IBF instructed champion Oleksandr Usyk to begin negotiations with IBF mandatory challenger Filip Hrgovic. On November 14, 2022, the WBA informed the IBF that the WBA will adhere to the system of -round set by the IBF, WBA, WBC and WBO. The IBF agrees that the WBA is next in line. The IBF revokes the order to begin negotiations between Usyk and Hrgovic for a mandatory title defense,” Peoples mentioned in the Boxing Scene.
Previously, the IBF ordered Usyk to defend his belt against Hrgovic. After that, representatives of the Croatian boxer asked for negotiations on a duel with the Ukrainian champion. Usyk’s team said that he will not give up the IBF belt for the sake of the fight with Tyson Fury.
At the same time, the WBA called on other boxing organizations to join forces to make the fight for the title of undisputed heavyweight champion happen.
