In 2017, Washington was a contender for the WBC title.
Deontay Wilder coach Malik Scott announced that the next opponent of the former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua may be 40-year-old American Gerald Washington.
“Gerald Washington is one of the leading boxers who could possibly fight Anthony Joshua. It’s not a rumor, it’s a fact that he’s one of the options. And that’s what Gerald is ready for. I keep telling people that Gerald is a big, strong, bossy guy.”
“Gerald is better than ever, he’s hungrier than ever and I can’t wait for you guys to see him. And I can’t wait to see him in the ring myself. I am very optimistic that the fight will take place, especially at this moment when they are trying to make the next move for AJ.”
In 2017, Washington was a contender for the WBC world title, but lost by knockout from Deontay Wilder. In the last fight in January 2022, Washington lost to Turk Ali Eren Demirezen.
Earlier, promoter Eddie Hearn commented on Joshua’s upcoming plans. Hearn also said that Joshua will fight his next fight in March-April. Joshua himself said that he wants to enter the ring in the next fight with Dillian Whyte.
Recall that in his last fight in August, Joshua lost by split decision to Ukrainian boxer, WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.
