The International Boxing Association (IBA) has paid around $8 million to athletes competing in major tournaments in 2021-22, the organization’s press service reports.
As stated, this is an unprecedented step in the history of the IBA, and “it demonstrates the organisation’s commitment to promoting and supporting the sport”.
“The prize money has enabled athletes to have a better quality of life now and after the end of their boxing career. This is a significant step forward for boxing as it provides boxers with the financial stability and security they need to focus on training and competition. The prize money paid by the IBA has also helped to raise the profile of the sport and attract more athletes to competition. This has led to increased competition and better performances, making the sport more exciting for fans and spectators.
In October, the IBA Board of Directors voted to admit boxers from Russia and Belarus to competitions under the organization’s auspices with the decision taking effect immediately. The boxers will perform under the national flag and with the national anthem. IBA has been led by a Russian since 2020 Umar Kremlev .
