The World Boxing Council (WBC) sanctions the fight between the Russians Sergei Kovalev and South Africa’s Tabiso Mchunu as the No. 1 heavyweight contender, WBC chief Mauricio Suleiman has told .
Former WBA, WBO, IBF light heavyweight champion Kovalev lost earlier than expected to Mexican Saul Alvarez in 2019 and didn’t fight the next fight until 2022, but already in the first heavyweight – in May, Kovalev defeated Bulgarian Tervel Pulev. The 39-year-old Russian has 35 wins, four losses and a draw in the professional ring.
– The WBC will sanction the fight between Kovalev and Mchunu as a challenger. And it will be the second mandatory defense for the champion, Mauricio Suleiman told .
The WBC heavyweight champion is Ilunga Makabu from DR Congo, who has already beaten Mchuna twice. For the second time – during his last fight of the moment – last January: the fight ended in victory for Makabu by split decision of the judges, it was his first mandatory defense. Mchunu is known for his wins over Russians Denis Lebedev and Evgeny Tishchenko. In 2016, a South African boxer lost to Alexander Usik.
