Boxers met in the ring five years ago
Former IBF World Heavyweight Champion Mairis Briedis expressed his desire to have a rematch with the Ukrainian boxer, the current holder of the WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight belts Oleksandr Usyk.
“My dream, I would probably be motivated, I think the most interesting fight for all boxing fans is a rematch with Usyk,” said Briedis.
“I would be even better prepared. I think he would have been better prepared. It would be the most interesting fight. We had a very close fight, but at that time there were nuances that prevented me from taking this step. And now I would do it, I would take risks, I would not save my strength.
Usyk and Briedis met in the ring on January 27, 2018 in Riga – in a tense 12-round duel, the decision of the majority of judges won the Ukrainian (114:114, 115:113, 115:113).
Then Usyk unified the WBO and WBC cruiserweight titles. Briedis suffered his first defeat in the pro ring.
Now the Ukrainian is preparing to fight for the title of absolute world heavyweight champion with the owner of the WBC belt Tyson Fury. Usyk’s full-time duel with the Gypsy King may take place on April 29.
