The International Boxing Association (IBA) has unveiled its qualification system for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, with the men’s and women’s world championships as the main qualifiers.
Earlier, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Committee decided that the qualifying starts and boxing competitions at the 2024 Olympics would not be held under the auspices of the IBA. In September 2022, the IOC approved the qualification program for the 2024 Olympic Games based on the results of the five regional international tournaments in 2023. These are the Pan American Games in Santiago, the European Games in Krakow, the Games of Pacific in the Solomon Islands and the Asian Games in Guangzhou. At that time, the status of the African Games in Accra, also supposed to be qualifying, was in question. Thus, the IOC attempted to remove tournaments under the auspices of the IBA from the qualification system. The IBA deemed the selection system with a regional tournament “unacceptable and dishonest in relation to the athletes”.
The women’s world championship will take place from March 15 to 31 in New Delhi. Tashkent will host the men’s tournament from May 1-14. The national teams of Russia and Belarus, according to the decision of the IBA, will perform at the championship with national symbols. The national federations of several countries, including the United States, Finland and Sweden, have announced a boycott of the competition.
“The upcoming IBA World Boxing Championships in New Delhi and Tashkent will be the main qualifying events for the 2024 Paris Games. In order to give all athletes the right to participate in the World Boxing Championships and not be victimized political games of several national federations, the IBA uses an open registration process for athletes from boycotting countries to participate in the World Championships.
The IBA reiterates its openness to working with the IOC in the interest of boxing, the athletes, the stability and the quality of the product of the Olympic Games. The IBA and the boxing community will not accept any other qualifying format for Paris 2024 other than the following: Women’s Boxing World Championship, Men’s Boxing World Championship and Open Qualifier Final in May 2024. of our confederations, IBA and Continental ranking quotas will be used, as well as three Golden Series tournaments, the IBA said in a statement.
The IOC suspended the IBA in 2019 due to a managerial and financial crisis, so the 2020 Games boxing tournament was not held under the auspices of the association.
The 2024 Olympics in Paris will take place from July 26 to August 11.
