Jorge Masvidal could claim the UFC welterweight title fight or Colby Covington can get a title shot
Leon Edwards’ denial of a future title fight with Colby Covington came as a surprise, instead the champion would like to fight Jorge Masvidal.
Following the events of UFC 286, Dana White made a dizzying announcement. Colby Covington has been announced as the next welterweight title contender on a winning streak over 11th-placed Jorge Masvidal who is over a year old. Edwards laughed off UFC chief’s statement and suggested a match against Masvidal instead
It’s not every day that a fighter from the 11th rank takes on the 5th fighter in his division. So if Masvidal beats Gilbert Burns, whose chin isn’t the best, decisively, he could generate enough interest to even challenge for the welterweight title.
Any hope of Edwards taking on his favorite opponent Jorge Masvidal hinges on Gilbert Burns winning or losing at UFC 287. Unfortunately for the Englishman, if Burns defeats Masvidal, his hopes of fighting Jorge will be dashed.
Not only will Masvidal be sent further out of the top ten, but Covington’s position as the number one contender for the title fight will also be strengthened.
Israel Adesanya can take revenge on Alex Pereira for the loss or the Brazilian will end their rivalry
Israel Adesanya has lost to Alex Pereira three times in his martial arts career. His first two losses came while he was a kickboxer, and the third time he lost was in MMA at UFC 281.
Adesanya fought well in all three fights. Unfortunately for him, the first loss was a split decision, and in the other two fights he had an advantage, but Pereira suddenly finished him with knockouts. From every fight of this pair, it becomes clear that Adesanya is capable of defeating Pereira.
And at UFC 287, Adesanya will likely get one last chance for revenge on his longtime rival. Given his skill set, it’s entirely possible that he’ll succeed and not only regain the title, but ultimately defeat his greatest source of frustration.
If Pereira wins, it will be extremely difficult for the UFC to sell the idea of another fight between him and Adesanya. A victory for the Brazilian at UFC 287, notably by knockout, will close the final chapter of this rivalry.
