“The name ‘Pop MMA’ distorts the reputation of the sport. We are not against their tournaments, but for censorship” – head of the MMA Union of Russia

President of the MMA Union of Russia Radmir Gabdullin stated that the organization is not against holding events in the spirit of pop-MMA, but is strongly against lewd moments.

Pop-MMA are fights according to various rules, in which non-professional fighters, mostly famous bloggers, participate.

“There are conversations about how we reacted to MMA pop. The name distorts the reputation of the sport. You can’t call it MMA pop. Athletes who take part in these events all the same set a record, organize fights close to fights according to the rules of MMA. We’ve had allegations before that they behaved obscenely. It is important to us that they take censorship into account. At such events, athletes used the wrong methods to attract attention, insulting each other. This violates the traditions of all Russian sports. We did not ask for the prohibition of such competitions, but asked to include a strict filter in the communication. Their athletes can participate in our tournaments. I will continue to insist that our sport be cultural and carry the ideology of education, courage and patriotism,” Gabdullin said during a press conference at the press centre.

“Have you had meetings with representatives of the leagues?”

– Yes, we had several meetings with different representatives of the leagues. Someone heard us, and someone said they weren’t ready, because through this they get views, get money. I wouldn’t want anything out of their control to happen at their events. After all, it will affect our sport. We will continue the negotiations, we will initiate these meetings ourselves. Every athlete involved in MMA is important to us.

– How does Fedor Emelianenko react to this phenomenon?

– Fedor is always for order, for discipline. He personifies our sport, he is the face of MMA not only in Russia, but also abroad.
