United wrestling world allowed Russian athletes to compete under IOC conditions

The United World of Wrestling (UWW) has allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions, subject to International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendations, Georgy Bryusov, head of the UWW Sport for All commission, said on his Telegram channel.

This decision was taken at a meeting of the UWW Executive Committee. Bryusov also noted that the UWW executive committee had suggested that the IOC relax the criteria for Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions, particularly regarding athletes working under contract with military organizations.

In addition, the Executive Committee decided to take the following decisions:

— World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) requirements are non-negotiable;

– provide additional security measures during competitions to protect athletes;

– athletes from the youth teams of Russia and Belarus (U15 and U17) will not be tested for their links with military organisations;

– the decision to participate in the competitions of the youth teams of Russia and Belarus (U15 and U17) takes effect immediately;

— ensuring the safe participation of youth teams from Russia and Belarus (U15 and U17) in international competitions.

On March 28, the IOC announced recommendations on the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. Recommendations include individual clearance, status neutrality, banning team sports, and banning athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the CWO. A decision on the Paris 2024 Olympics will be taken “at the appropriate time”, said the IOC.
