Nurmagomedov backed at rally in US accused of attempted murder of fighter – media

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) champion Khabib Nurmagomedov participated in a rally in support of the promotion’s former two-time heavyweight belt holder, American Cain Velasquez, reports MMA Junkie.

Velazquez was arrested Feb. 28 in San Jose. The fighter chased the car of Harry Gularte, accused of assaulting a relative of Velasquez, rammed the car, fired several times and injured his stepfather Gularte. Velasquez was charged with attempted murder and sent to prison.

A plea hearing for the former UFC champion has been postponed for the third time. The judge approved and set a new date for Velasquez’s trial – June 30.

A large group of Velasquez supporters wearing “Free Kane” t-shirts gathered with signs outside the courthouse. Among them was the Russian Nurmagomedov.

Velasquez, 39, is also charged with shooting a car, assault with a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, shooting from a vehicle, carrying a firearm, carrying a firearm charged with intent to commit a crime.

If convicted of attempted murder, Velasquez faces a minimum of 20 years in prison and up to life in prison, according to the California Penal Code.

Velasquez twice asked to be released on bail, and both times he was denied. The fighter is placed in the main county jail in Santa Clara, California.

Velasquez last wrestled in February 2019 after which he competed in WWE wrestling bouts.
