Vasily can become one of the oldest absolute world champions in history and earn a record fee
Early Sunday morning, from May 20 to May 21, former three-division title holder Vasily Lomachenko enter the ring against WBC, WBA Super, IBF and WBO lightweight champion Devin Haney. In the fight, which will be held in Las Vegas, Lomachenko can set several records. We tell you which ones.
The biggest fee
According to insiders, Lomachenko’s guaranteed earnings in the fight with Haney will be $3 million. According to unofficial information, Lomachenko earned more in one fight only once: the fight for the undisputed world lightweight title lost to Teofimo Lopez brought the Ukrainian $3,250,000. But now Lomachenko can block this result.
The thing is that the Lomachenko-Haney fight in the USA and the world will be broadcast on the PPV system. The cost of broadcasting is $60. The boxers will also receive a percentage of the money earned from the sale of the fight.
It must be admitted that the forecasts regarding the number of sold broadcasts are not too optimistic yet – analysts are leaning towards the figure of 200,000. But even such a result guarantees boxers at least several million dollars in additional income.
Age of absolute championship
At the time of the fight with Haney Lomachenko will be 35 years and three months old. If the Ukrainian wins, he will become the oldest absolute world champion in history, who managed to get FOUR championship titles.
Why is quantity important? Because the legendary Bernard Hopkins won his first title of absolute world champion at the age of 36 years and 8 months. In order to get the “absolute” in the middle weight, the Executioner in 2001 needed all the same four belts.
But the outstanding Nigerian boxer Dick Tiger, who became the absolute world champion in middle and light heavyweight in the mid-1960s, won only the WBC and WBA belts. Moreover, in middleweight he became the absolute world champion at almost 34 years old, in light heavyweight – at full 36.
From examples not so distant, we can recall Ronald Winky Wright, who received the title of absolute world champion in the first middleweight after winning three belts at the age of 32.
Well, you can’t ignore Lennox Lewis, who is given the title of absolute world champion in super heavyweight, despite the presence of three belts. The British received this status at the age of 34 years and 3 months.
