President of the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR) Mikhail Mamiashvili said he was optimistic about the participation of Russian athletes in the world championships in Serbia.
Previously, the executive committee of United World Wrestling (UWW) decided to allow Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in international competitions, subject to the recommendations of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
– We try to work under conditions of limited opportunity. On April 26, another Poddubny Professional League party was held in Almaty. Nine world champions, three Olympic champions participated. The bleachers were overcrowded and there were not enough seats for thousands who wanted them.
– What are Russia’s chances of participating in the Belgrade championship?
“We are solving problems. Search for compromise. For now, we are looking at the participation prospects of our athletes with optimism.
– Will they require political commitments to be admitted, as was the case, for example, recently in the case of weightlifters?
“Such initiatives are born of inferiority. It’s a pity that everyone in sport suffers from this,” the Russian Olympic Committee’s press service quoted Mamiashvili as saying.
On March 28, the IOC announced recommendations on the admission of Russian and Belarusian athletes to international competitions. Recommendations include individual clearance, status neutrality, banning team sports, and banning athletes associated with security forces or who have expressed support for the CWO. A decision on the Paris 2024 Olympics will be taken “at the appropriate time”, the IOC has said.
