Todd Duboeuf says a large number of championship belts prevent the fight for the absolute title
President of Top Rank Promotion Company Todd Duboeuf believes that the fight for the title of absolute champion in the heavyweight division between the British Tyson Fury and Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk broke due to lack of time for negotiations.
“I think one of the determining factors was time. Unfortunately, you have mandatory titles, and when you have all those titles, there are also a number of #1 contenders.”
“There is a slight organizational dysfunction going on in this sport because we are a century and a half old. You try to deal with it, but there are problems when you need to organize a fight urgently.
“Ideally, it would be nice if the fight had already taken place. Usyk is a big fight for Fury, Anthony Joshua is also a big fight. Both of us would like to see, and I think that these two fights Tyson would like to have.”
The unification fight between Usyk and Fury was planned to take place on April 29. However, the parties did not reach an agreement and suspended the negotiations.
Fury sent a draft contract to fight Anthony Joshua. Fury’s spokesman George Warren and promoter Joshua Eddie Hearn have already begun talks. Last year, the boxing teams also discussed a potential fight, but then the parties came to nothing.
Earlier it was reported that Tyson is in talks with undefeated Australian Damsey McKean (22-0, 14 KOs) and IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaya.
