The International Boxing Association (IBA) has said it recognizes the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to grant the appeal of Dutchman Boris van der Voorst, who was not allowed to appear at the organization’s presidential election, according to to place IBA.
The elections took place in May. The current IBA President is a Russian Umar Kremlev was the only candidate for the position. Van der Voorst’s offer was rejected by the Interim Nominating Committee of the Boxing Integrity Unit (BIIU) due to rule violations.
The CAS ruled that the candidates, including van der Voorst, had committed a minor violation of the rules that would merit a light sanction, such as a warning, but not exclusion from the election. The court noted that Kremlev committed the same violation and was not punished for it.
“The IBA takes note of today’s CAS decision, will receive legal advice on its implications and will consider appropriate action on June 24 when the newly elected Board of Directors meets in Lausanne.
The IBA notes that the decision to deprive the claimants in this case of the right to be elected in May this year was taken by an independent body. The IBA remains grateful to the independent bodies that support our commitment to achieving the highest standards of governance,” the statement read.
