UFC could eliminate weight class in women’s fights after Nunes retires from sport

UFC Manager Dana White said the women’s featherweight division would likely be abolished after the promotion’s two-division champion Amanda Nunes announced his retirement.

Brazilian Nunez defeated Mexican Irene Aldana by unanimous decision on June 10 at UFC 289 in Vancouver (Canada). After the fight was over, Nunes said it was “the perfect night to announce his retirement”, put his two championship belts in the bantamweight and featherweight divisions on the ring floor and burst into tears.

– Are we going to close the women’s featherweight division after the departure of Amanda Nunez? The likely answer is yes. I don’t make such decisions immediately after the tournament. She told me as she approached the cage that she was done with the sport. I don’t know (for the closure of the division), but it makes sense,” White quotes MMAFighting.

Nunes, 35, has 23 wins and five losses in mixed martial arts.
