The scandal between the Russian and the Dutch functionary van der Voorst continues
IBA President Umar Kremlev made a proposal for re-election to the post of head of the organization. According to the Russian, there is no need to be afraid of competition. At the same time, Kremlev believes that he can improve the future of boxing.
“The IBA Board of Directors will meet on June 24 in Lausanne. I wrote to the board of directors recommending a new election. I am grateful for the trust placed in me by the IBA member federations both in the 2020 elections and again this year. If the CAS said that my opponent should have been eligible to stand in the election, then let’s hold a new election. However, this is the decision of the IBA Board of Directors.”
“In boxing, we should never be afraid of competition. I have seen for myself countless times how boxing can change the lives of young people for the better, and I have experienced it myself. Now I am at the point where I can return to boxing and significantly improve the future of our sport, and I am proud of it.”
Recall that the Dutch functionary Boris van der Voorst and a number of other candidates were not allowed to participate in the elections due to campaigning outside the electoral period. However, CAS found that re-elected IBA President Umar Kremlev was guilty of the same violation, but he was not removed from the election.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport has already granted van der Voorst’s appeal against the BIIU’s decision to bar him from running for president of the International Boxing Association.
In May, Kremlev was re-elected president of the IBA. He was the only candidate in the elections. Recall that the President of the Boxing Federation of Ukraine Volodymyr Prodivus joined the Board of Directors of the IBA.
Previously, van der Voorst demanded from the IBA a more decisive response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and the disclosure of financial statements under the sponsorship agreement with Russia’s Gazprom.
The IBA is an independent organization that sanctioned boxing at the amateur level. Founded in 1946.
