The International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) refusal to recognize the International Boxing Association (IBA) will be a big historic mistake, Russian Boxing Federation Secretary General Tatyana Kiriyenko has said.
In June, the IOC Executive Board recommended to the organization’s session that recognition of the IBA be withdrawn because the association had not fulfilled the conditions necessary for its reinstatement proposed by the IOC in December 2021. extraordinary session of the IOC will be held on June 22.
— The IOC refused to recognize the IBA. What do you think of that?
– Let’s wait for June 22 and follow closely the declarations of the President of the International Boxing Federation. We can clearly see its strategy and its policy, we are sure that the IOC will not accept such a decision, because it is wrong. It will be a historic mistake on their part. We all see how one of the many world federations met last year at three boxing congresses. I have already said that everyone supports the policies of the IBA, and in the entire history of the organization there has never been such a breakthrough, such attractive activities and prizes.
World boxing is growing very strongly on all continents. Nobody wants to give it up. Boxing enjoys strong support, 205 countries are developing boxing, and most of them are in solidarity that this sport is unified and on the Olympic program. Those who are truly for boxing stand in solidarity that the IOC will not make such a decision. We are hoping and waiting for June 22,” reports SPIEF-2023 correspondent Kiriyenko.
IBA recognition was suspended in June 2019 by an IOC session decision. An alternative federation, World Boxing, was recently formed and several countries left the IBA to join the new organization.
