Russians Bashaev and Kanikovsky won gold medals at the Grand Slam judo tournament in Astana

Bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympics Tamerlan Bachaev and Matvey Kanikovsky brought gold medals to Russia on the final day of competition at the Grand Slam judo tournament in Astana.

Bashaev, competing in the weight category over 100 kg, defeated Temur Rakhimov of Tajikistan in the final. Another Russian, Valery Endovitsky, won the bronze medal in the heavyweight division, beating Georgian Guram Tushishvili in the decisive fight for the prize. Another bronze medal in this weight went to Kazakhstan’s Galymzhan Kyrykbay.

Kanikovsky in the final of the weight category up to 100 kg was stronger than Jafar Kostoev, representing the United Arab Emirates. The bronze medalists in this weight were Islam Bozbaev (Kazakhstan) and Zlatko Kumrich (Croatia).

The Astana competitions were the qualifying stage for the Paris Olympic Games.
