Former undisputed world light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. called the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) decision to withdraw recognition from the International Boxing Association (IBA) sad.
Earlier, IOC Director General Christophe De Koepper announced at an extraordinary session of the IOC that the IBA had been stripped of its recognition status. This was later confirmed by the results of the session vote.
I am incredibly upset by this decision. It’s truly sad. To give further feedback, you need to discuss nuances with process participants,” said Roy Jones Jr.
IBA recognition was suspended in June 2019 by an IOC session decision. In June this year, the IOC Executive Board recommended to the organization’s session to withdraw recognition from the IBA, as the association did not meet the necessary conditions for restoration proposed by the IOC in December 2021. The IOC Executive Board also recommended that the session “in the interest of athletes and sport” keep boxing on the program of the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
An alternative World Boxing federation has recently been organized, several countries have left the IBA to join the new organization.
