Russian UFC fighter Yana Kunitskaya told RB Sport that the departure of two-time MMA champion Amanda Nunes surprised her.
Nunes defeated Irene Aldana in June in the main event of UFC 289. After the fight, the 35-year-old Brazilian announced her retirement.
What emotions did Amanda Nunes leave you with in MMA?
– It was unexpected, I was very surprised. It was only recently that she built herself a gym to facilitate training. I thought she would play again. It’s good for the division, all the girls are perked up. The division will shine new colors.
Who will be the next champion?
– I think any girl in the top 5 or top 10. All strong and unpredictable. The math in MMA doesn’t work, the outcome of the fight is hard to predict, and there’s no dominant girl. It all depends on who and with whom will fight. I think the title fight will be Julianne Peña and Raquel Pennington. It is difficult to predict who will win.
Is there a girl in the division who has the potential to become as dominant a champion as Nunes?
— I don’t think there will be a dominant champion. Most likely the belt will change hands,” Kunitskaya said.
Nunes has competed in the UFC since 2013, overall in MMA she has 23 wins with five losses. Nunes has won victories over athletes such as Valentina Shevchenko, Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Mischa Tate and Holly Holm.
