Islam Makhachev lost in the ESPY Award UFC Fighter of the Year poll.
The winner of the annual nomination was the American John Johnson.
Britain’s Leon Edwards and Brazil’s Amanda Nunez also won the award.
In October last year, Makhachev defeated Brazilian Charles Oliveira by knockout for the vacant UFC lightweight belt. He held a defense of the belt – in February of this year in Australia, Islam beat Australian featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski by unanimous decision.
Makhachev has 24 wins with one loss.
The ESPY Award is given by the American television network ESPN to the best athletes and teams over the past calendar year. ESPY award winners are determined by fan votes.
