UFC: Durinho makes great fight against Chimaev, but is defeated

UFC featured Khamzat Chimaev going through his toughest test of the season so far, being declared the winner by unanimous decision of the judges

UFC 273 featured this Saturday, the 9th, with the fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Gilbert Durinho. The clash was the toughest test the Chechen has had so far this season, but it wasn’t what he imagined. In front of the second place in the welterweight ranking, he went for the first time to the final bell of the third round.

The Brazilian put on a good fight, but ended up being defeated by the unanimous decision of the judges in a triple 29-28 in favor of Chimaev, showing that his rise in the competition is real, guaranteeing the permanence of his invincibility in MMA. The Chechen was so comfortable before the fight that he even sat on the fence to wait for his opponent.

On the other side, Durinho was quite tense and trying to calm down. Even though he had already fought for the belt and faced some of the best in the division, he knew that the Chechen would be one of the most important and difficult challenges of his career. The Brazilian initially resisted the fall, but the opponent showed his strength by dragging him to the ground.

Durinho somersaulted and brought him to guard, with Chimaev getting to his feet, aware of the danger of his opponent’s jiu-jitsu. Once on his feet, Durinho gradually gained more confidence, releasing powerful jabs and straights when the Brazilian’s left hook made Chimaev touch the ground with his hands.

Despite that, the Chechen landed a right jab that knocked Durinho backwards. Chimaev threw in a few more elbows and opened a gash on his head. Only for the second time in his stint in the UFC, the Chechen would go to the second round. In the next round, the Brazilian landed a right hook that made the Chechen hit his knee on the ground.

At that moment Durinho went for it, but Chimaev showed resistance, sent back blows and recovered. The Brazilian went in the legs and the Russian made a sprawl, already threatening to attack with a choke. Durinho escaped and pushed the opponent away with both feet on his chest, and in the rest of the fight both hit hard crosses.

Again Durinho made Chimaev fall forward with two accurate right hooks and even tried a kick that almost hit the head, which if he had hit it would have been illegal. Chimaev took down his opponent in the double leg and the round ended, but the two continued and had to be separated.

For the first time in the UFC, Chimaev reached the third round. The Chechen didn’t seem to be tired at all and began the assault putting his pace. The Brazilian tried a single leg, but Chimaev defended and continued to switch on his feet, at a time when Durinho felt the blows, but still fought hard.

In the final stretch of the round Chimaev seemed to slow down a bit and Durinho managed to land some jabs and straights. The right hook entered well once more, but the Chechen resisted the Brazilian’s response well and asked for more. The final decision was made by the judges, and declared the Brazilian defeat in the confrontation.
