IBA warns of sanctions against national federations that have switched to world boxing

The International Boxing Association (IBA) has issued a statement on the transition of some national federations to the alternative organization World Boxing.

The national boxing federations of the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Great Britain, England and the Netherlands became the first official members of World Boxing. In the federation statement, it was reported that representatives from these countries will participate in the organization’s first congress in November 2023 and will have the opportunity to nominate candidates for positions in the new international federation, including the presidency.

“Unfortunately, incorrect information has been provided to National Federations suggesting that dual affiliation and affiliation to both the IBA and another International Federation is acceptable. The IBA reminds its members that this is not the case.

As a fundamental principle of our organization, National Federations cannot simultaneously be members of another International Boxing Organization in accordance with Article 5.5 of the IBA Statutes and Article 5.2 of the Membership Policy at the IBA. IBA membership required national federations to strictly adhere to IBA statutes and regulations. Entities and individuals who fail to comply with these rules may face consequences and disciplinary action, the IBA said in a statement.

The IOC Executive Board had previously recommended to the organization’s session that recognition of the IBA be withdrawn because the association had not fulfilled the conditions necessary for its reinstatement. In June 2023, the decision was approved by a majority.
