International Judo Federation – on the admission of Russians to the tournament in Mongolia: “Sport is not politics, but a bridge between cultures”

Russian athletes have been admitted to the Grand Slam tournament in Mongolia because there is no room for politics in judo, said Vlad Marinescu, director general of the International Judo Federation (IJF).

Russian judoists will participate in the international tournament in Ulaanbaatar as neutral athletes – under the IJF flag. The Ukrainian national team refused to participate in the competition due to the admission of Russians.

— The IFJ opposes all forms of violence, as well as hatred and discrimination. Sport is not politics, sport is a bridge between different cultures. Our values are the values of sport, where there is no place for politics, quotes Marinescu on the IJF website.

– The Russian athletes will defend the colors of the IJF and will have to respect, like all the other judokas, the rules of judo in force. Any type of political struggle or unsportsmanlike attitude, such as refusing to salute before and after each fight, will be penalized according to the rules, the IJF said in a statement.
