The Ukrainian wanted to refuse a rematch with Joshua because of the war in Ukraine
WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO World Heavyweight Champion Oleksandr Usyk spoke about how he could give up his titles after the start of a full-scale Russian military invasion of Ukraine.
“At that time, I didn’t think about boxing … I didn’t even have any thoughts about boxing. There were even thoughts such as to release the belts, so that the guys would box for them further, and here, when everything is over, then come back and say: “Well, this is the situation, let’s have some options or something else.”
But when I talked to the military who were in the hospital, they said: “Alexander, what are you thinking about? Why don’t you go to practice? You have a rematch, we need a win.” And it was in every room I entered. The guys asked to go to prepare and box. After talking with the guys, I decided for myself that I would leave Ukraine for training, box and return to do what the country needs from me, ”Usyk said.
Recall that after the start of a full-scale invasion, Usyk joined the ranks of the defense, but later left Ukraine in order to prepare for revenge against Anthony Joshua. The Ukrainian in his last fight defeated the Briton again, defending his belts.
The Ukrainian will play his next fight against British heavyweight Daniel Dubois on August 26. The event will take place in Wroclaw, Poland, at the Tarczynski Arena. It was reported that Usyk would receive 75% of the total prize fund – $6 million. Dubois can count on 25% – 2 million. The championship fight will be shown by the MEGOGO media service.
