Former world eight-weight boxing champion Manny Pacquiao is keen to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris, Philippine National Olympic Committee (NOC) chief Abraham Tolentino has said.
The Filipino boxer had his last fight in the professional ring in 2021, losing to Yordenis Ugas. Last December, Pacquiao defeated blogger Dee Kay Yo in a six-round exhibition match.
Senator Pacquiao’s team says the Filipino boxer wants to fight in Paris. But the senator cannot expect to qualify for the Asian Games in Hangzhou next month,” Tolentino said, as quoted by Rappler.
According to him, Pacquiao’s team has started negotiations with the Association of Boxing Unions of the Philippines (ABAP) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
The material indicates that the Asian Games imposes a restriction on athletes of all sports: 40 years. But Pacquiao, 44, could qualify for the Olympics through two qualifying tournaments in the first and second quarters of 2024.
Pacquiao has 62 wins (39 by KO), eight losses (3 by KO) and two draws in professional boxing.
The Paris Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11, 2024.
