Promoter Dubois is adamant in his decision to appeal the result of the fight
Promoter Frank Warren shared his opinion on the actions of the referee in the ring during the sensational fight of the WBA/WBO/IBF/IBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk with British heavyweight Daniel Dubois.
A spokesman for Dubois’ team continues to insist that the controversial blow that the Briton delivered in the fifth round was legitimate and Usyk had no right to indulgence.
“The referee made a mistake. This hit was legal. The referee didn’t even think about it. He just said “low blow”. And automatically gave him [Усику] three minutes and forty-six seconds of recovery time, well over a round. Usyk, to his credit, said he would have risen if the referee had started the countdown. And he could have stood up and boxed, but he got all that time and it wasn’t right.”
“He misunderstood the situation, Pabon. I mean he was also the referee in the second fight [Усик против] Joshua, and there was a similar situation where Joshua caught him with a good body shot and the same thing happened there. By the way, he is also the official chairman of the WBA committee, so he will have to apologize for the appeal we are filing.”
“Dubois fell after two punches that no one expected. The first time he got up, and the second time I would like to see him get up. What happened in that round changed the whole dynamic of the fight. And the bottom line is, if you want to be the best, you need to bite the bullet and watch a video of Tyson Fury on the floor and what he did to get up and get back in the fight. because that’s what you have to do.”
“But that doesn’t change the fact that it was a 100% wrong decision by the referee. He didn’t instruct the fighters, or at least he didn’t instruct Daniel or both fighters correctly, and he made a mistake.”
Earlier, Warren said that the British team “will seek the WBA to declare this fight void.”
According to Ukrainian promoter Oleksandr Krasiuk, Dubois’s appeal has no chance of success.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) and the leadership of the World Boxing Council (WBC) also expressed their official positions on the scandalous episode. Both those and others agreed that the referee made the right decision and Usyk won cleanly.
Usyk defeated Dubois on the evening of August 26 in Wroclaw by TKO in the 9th round. The judge in the ring was the representative of Puerto Rico, Luis Pabon.
The Ukrainian defended his WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO titles for the second time. For the Ukrainian undefeated boxer, this victory was the 21st in the professional ring, the 14th time Usyk ended the fight ahead of schedule. Dubois suffered the second defeat of his career.
