Dutch kickboxer of Moroccan origin Badr Hari withdrew from fighting at the Glory88 tournament in Paris as a sign of respect for the memory of the victims of the Moroccan earthquake.
Hari was scheduled to meet England’s James McSweeney in the evening’s main event. Shortly before the fight, the 38-year-old fighter announced that he had no plans to fight.
— People are looking for the bodies of the dead. “I prefer to support people in Morocco rather than entertain a few people for money,” Hari said, as quoted by AD.nl.
“Because of this earthquake, it is inappropriate to fight for the sake of it while people are fighting for their lives or that of their families,” Parisian coach Mike Passenier said.
Hari lost to Alistair Overeem by unanimous decision last October. The fight was later declared a no contest due to Overeem’s positive doping test.
The number of victims of the earthquake in Morocco on Sunday morning exceeded 2,000 people.
