WBC President: We would like to see Fury fight Usyk, so we will not rush to find a mandatory challenger

The president World Boxing Council (WBC) Mauricio Suleiman spoke about a potential fight for the WBC title holder Tyson Fury with the WBO/WBA/IBF/IBO world champion Alexander Usik and the plans of the organization itself in this regard.

“[Фьюри] doesn’t fight Oleksandr Usyk because he wasn’t ready last December. Then they could not agree in March, and after that they went their separate ways. Anthony Joshua is the same, so don’t blame Tyson Fury.”

“We won’t rush into a mandatory challenger. We booked Wilder vs. Ruiz and the winner would have been a sensational mandatory challenger, but that fight didn’t happen. They don’t participate in it, that’s why there is no obligatory contender.”

“Fury is without a doubt the best heavyweight. We would like to see Fury fight Usyk, so we will not interfere with plans for a major unification fight. So we are not in a hurry to find a mandatory challenger, but will wait for the WBC convention.”

“Everything is focused on October 28th. As soon as this fight takes place, the WBC convention will be held from November 12 to 17, and there the WBC Board of Governors will make a decision regarding the heavyweight division,” Suleiman concluded.

Fury will fight former UFC champion Felix Ngannou on October 28 in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. The WBC granted Tyson special permission for this fight.

Usyk challenged Fury to a fight after successfully defending his WBA/WBO/IBO/IBF titles against Daniel Dubois. Negotiations between the parties continue, and January 27, 2024 is called a potential date for the unification battle. The plans of the Ukrainian champion may be hindered by the IBF, which may nominate Filip Hrgovic as a mandatory challenger.
