Russian wrestler Magomedov: “I understood in advance that the Ukrainian would not shake my hand”

European and world freestyle wrestling champion, Russian Abasgadji Magomedov told that he understood in advance that his opponent, Ukrainian Valentin Blesetsky, would not shake his hand after the quarter-final match at the World Championships in Serbia.

The World Wrestling Championships, qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, began on Saturday in Belgrade. In the quarterfinals of the freestyle wrestling tournament in the weight category up to 61 kg, Magomedov defeated Blesetsky with a score of 16:4. The two wrestlers did not approach or shake hands after the winner was announced.

— Isn’t it a shame that you confidently won the quarterfinals and finished the fight with a beautiful throw, and now they are discussing more about the fact that you did not shake hands?

– Don’t be offended, I don’t attach any importance to it. My job is to prove everything on the mat. I wasn’t upset that my opponent didn’t want to shake his hand. I knew in advance that this would happen. Nothing bad happened. Whoever wants to shake hands, whoever doesn’t want to doesn’t, that’s their business. We (Russian wrestlers) are kind people, our hand is always open,” Magomedov told .

Russian wrestlers participate in the tournament in neutral status.
