Olympic champion and three-time world boxing champion Andy Cruz was caught escaping from Cuba, the island’s boxing federation said, accusing the fighter of “serious indiscipline”.
The Cuban Boxing Federation (FCB) released a statement saying it was “informed that athlete Andy Cruz Gomez was involved in an attempt to illegally leave the country.”
Cruz, who won gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, is considered by many experts to be the best Cuban boxer of his generation. Previously, he did not show up at the national championship last week, nor at the pre-competition training camp.
He faces a temporary or permanent suspension from Cuban boxing due to the incident.
