Freestyle wrestler Abasgadji Magomedov won a silver medal at the World Championships in Serbia, despite problems with the admission of Russians to the tournament, the president of the Russian Wrestling Federation told Mikhail Mamiashvili .
Russian Magomedov lost to American Vitaly Arudzhau with a score of 9:10 in the weight category up to 61 kg in the final of the World Wrestling Championship in Belgrade. Magomedov brought the Russian team the first medal of the tournament in Serbia.
“I can only congratulate Magomedov on his silver medal, even if he was capable of winning gold. Abasgadzhi deserves the highest epithets, because he won the medal in difficult conditions and with difficult nerves. Our athletes have not participated in international competitions for a long time. And even when they came to Serbia for the World Cup, they still didn’t know whether or not they were allowed to enter. As a result, we received permission while we were already here. It doesn’t matter, the confidence will return to our athletes,” Mamiashvili told .
Magomedov had already won the 2021 World Championships in Oslo. The Russian is also European champion. Aruzhdau is the son of Soviet and Russian wrestler Vugar Orujev.
The World Championships take place in Belgrade from September 16 to 24. The Russians act in a neutral position. The tournament is a qualifier for the 2024 Summer Games in Paris, but the weight category up to 61 kg is not included in the Olympic weight category.
