On June 18, 2022, Artur Beterbiev entered the fight for the first time in his career off the Russian flag. He defeated Joe Smith Jr. by second-round knockout to defend the WBC and IBF light heavyweight titles and win the WBO title. After the fight, Beterbiev said going out under the Canadian flag was a necessary measure and expressed hope that he would not be judged harshly for the act.
