Russian freestyle wrestler Shamil Mamedov said he was happy to win a bronze medal at the World Championships in Serbia, despite not being able to compete for gold.
On Tuesday, Mamedov defeated Iranian Rahman Amuzadkhali with a score of 8:6 in the fight for the bronze medal in the weight category up to 65 kg. Additionally, Mamedov was granted a license for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
— In the quarterfinals, I made several tactical errors, because of this I had to fight for the bronze medal. It will be a good experience for me. I’m happy to have managed to defeat last year’s world champion, a very strong Iranian. It’s not a gold medal, but I’m also happy with the bronze medal.
— Many have said that you are a rising global star in your category. How do you feel after the World Championship experience and the medal you won?
“It’s very good that they consider me a good fighter and bet on me.” It’s nice to perform in such an environment, it’s my first senior world championship. It was great that there was support in the stands. Many people from Dagestan came here. Many people have been sick in front of TV screens, thank you very much for supporting me. Thank goodness after yesterday’s failure I managed to win a bronze medal.
— Do you have any serious competition in your weight category?
“65 and 74 kg are considered one of the most difficult weights; in these categories there are traditionally many prominent and strong wrestlers,” reports correspondent, according to Mamedov’s words.
The World Championships in Belgrade will end on September 24. The Russians are participating in the tournament in neutral status.
