Russian judoka Inal Tasoev received a gold medal at the World Championships in Qatar, reports the press service of the Russian Judo Federation.
The World Judo Championships took place in May in Doha. In June, the International Judo Federation (IJF) reviewed the results of the final match in the category over 100 kg, in which Tasoev lost to French three-time Olympic champion Teddy Riner. In added time, the Russian put his opponent on his back, but the attack was not evaluated. The IJF admitted the error, stating that “points could have been awarded for Tasoev’s counterattack”, and ultimately awarded gold to Tasoev and Riner in that fight.
The medal was presented to the judoka by senior national team coach Konstantin Filosofenko during a training session ahead of the Grand Slam tournament in Baku.
– Actually, I learned this in Sochi at the training camp. Our head coach told me that he would bring the medal to Baku. I’m very glad they didn’t send it to me, I didn’t receive it alone. It was handed to me alongside my team. And I was very happy to see their faces, how happy they were for me.
And I’m happy too. To be honest, I was already tormented by questions regarding this medal: “Where is it?” Will there be one at all? Now I have it. And now we can fully say that I am world champion,” Tasoev said.
