Russian wrestlers won five medals and four Olympic licenses at the World Championships in Belgrade

Russians completed their performances at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade by winning five medals and four licenses for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

The winner of the Olympic Games in freestyle wrestling, Zaurbek Sidakov, won gold at the World Championships and an Olympic quota in the weight category up to 74 kg. Freestyle wrestler Akhmed Usmanov became world champion in the weight category up to 79 kg, which is not Olympic.

Freestyle wrestler Abasgadzhi Magomedov won the silver medal in the under 61 kg category, but tickets to the Olympics were not competed in this weight category. Shamil Mamedov won the bronze medal and the Olympic license in the weight category up to 65 kg. Also at the freestyle wrestling tournament, taking fifth place, Zaur Uguev (up to 57 kg) and Abdulla Kurbanov (up to 125 kg) won the Olympic license.

Abdulrashid Sadulaev, two-time Olympic champion and five-time world champion in freestyle wrestling in the under 97 kg category, reached the semi-finals of the world championship in Belgrade, but an injury prevented him from fighting with Akhmed Tazhudinov of Bahrain. The Russian lost with a score of 2:9, but due to a neck injury he could not continue the fight. Subsequently, Sadulaev withdrew from the tournament and did not continue the fight for a medal and an Olympic license.

Greco-Roman wrestler Aues Gonibov won a bronze medal in the weight category up to 82 kg, which is not Olympic.

At the women’s wrestling tournament, Russian representatives were left without medals and did not win Olympic quotas.

The World Championships in Belgrade will end on September 24. The Russians participated in the tournament in neutral status.
